On a guided tour of the "House of the People" in Bucharest, the guide told us of a million square meters of marble, 35,000 tons of crystal; a carpet measuring 600 square meters and weighing almost two tons, woven on site; and the desire to make the building visible from space. A young couple, Romanians now living in Canada, asked angrily: "Why don't you tell us what existed here previously?" To build the "House of the People," entire neighborhoods were torn down, and more than 40,000 people were displaced from their homes. During the Ceausescu regime in Romania, between 10,000 and 100,000 people were killed - depending on who is counting and how.
Elena Ceausescu, in addition to being the president’s wife of, was known to be obsessive about her appearance and very involved in the highest echelons of the military government. Witnesses said that many people in the inner circle feared her more than they did her husband. She attended almost every meeting and accompanied him on state visits, was domineering and proud of her alleged scientific achievements.
In hasty trial they were given, Ceausescu repeatedly stated that he did not recognize the authority of the tribunal.
Sometimes the fortress does not fall, it simply remains as a scar in the landscape.
