"There is no document of civilization which is not at the same time a document of barbarism"
Walter Benjamin

A knitting journey. A pilgrimage without a god. A demonstration without a sign or a recipient.
"Borderline Knitting" is a journey of reflection and connection through the act of knitting on barbed wire in public spaces. The project originally began at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2023 under the name
Preventive Knitting, inspired by my mother’s crochet work and influenced by the war in Ukraine.
That work, my encounters with people around it, and the horrific war currently taking place in Gaza and Israel have driven me to recreate the project in the streets, outside any establishment, context, or boundaries.
Sitting on the street and knitting has become a home for me, a place where I can sit down and digest the oppressive weight of history and biography. Between being the son of Holocaust survivors and being witness to the genocide in Gaza and the events in Israel and around the world.
I start at may 2024 in Portbou, Spain, where Walter Benjamin took his life while trying to escape the Nazis. Since then, I’ve been knitting in the streets of over 40 cities and communities across Europe the Balkan and Japan, staying with people, engaging with local histories, and attempting to soften the borders within myself and the world around me.
